Guest Lecture & Panel Discussion












The Department of Economics at the University of Jaffna successfully conducted a two-day academic programme on 9th & 10th April 2026, supported by a grant from the India–Sri Lanka Foundation (ISLF). The Head of the Department of Economics, Dr. Kamalakumari Karunanithy, chaired the programme on both days. The programme featured two guest lectures and an interactive panel discussion, aligning with the objectives of the funded project.

Panel Discussion














The Department of Economics organised a guest lecture and panel discussion on 28th and 29th August 2025 titled ‘The Development Surge in Peninsular India: Lessons for Sri Lanka. The panel members were Dr. M. Vijayabaskar, Dr. Ahilan Kadirgamar, Prof. Neavis Morais, Mrs. M. D. A. Christian, and Dr. N. Ravinthirakumaran. The session was moderated by Dr. M. Sarvananthan.
Discussion on Provincial GDP of Northern Province – Growth contributors and inhibitors
A discussion on the Provincial GDP of the Northern Province, focusing on growth contributors and inhibitors, was held on 24th March 2025 from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM at the Mini Board Room, Faculty of Arts, University of Jaffna. The meeting was attended by the Chief Secretary to the Governor of the Northern Province; Mr. K. Sivachandran, Director of Planning, Provincial Council; Dr. (Ms.) K. Karunanithy, Head of the Department of Economics, University of Jaffna; Dr. Ahilan Kadirgamar, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology, University of Jaffna; Dr. M. Sarvananthan, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics; Mrs. Mary Delcia Antony Christian, Lecturer in the Department of Economics; and Ms. N. Neruja, Lecturer in the Department of Economics. The discussion centered on identifying the key factors contributing to economic growth in the Northern Province as well as the major constraints affecting provincial GDP performance.
World Bank Sri Lanka Growth Forum










World Bank Sri Lanka Growth Forum was held on 05th of February 2025 at Seminar Hall, Faculty of Arts arranged by Dept. of Economics. Student and Staff of Dept. of Economics and other colleagues from several Departments participated in this dialogue. Ms.M.D.A.Christian, Ms.S.Pratheepan & Ms.K.Abishayini presented development issues related to Northern Region.

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has invited the academics and students of the University of Jaffna to participate in the interactive session with the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. Empower Her – Experience sharing session Celebrating Women's Achievements and Inspiring Future Leaders







The Department of Economics at the University of Jaffna commemorated International Women’s Day with a special event titled “Empower Her.” Held on March 20, 2024, this event was designed to celebrate women’s achievements and inspire future leaders in the field of economics and business.
The event was organized in collaboration with the Gender Economics and Small Business and Entrepreneurship courses, highlighting the importance of empowering women for future education and economic development.
