Objective of the Seminar: The seminar aims to provide and enhance the knowledge of “National Income Accounting Calculation” and “Monetary policy under the new Central Bank Act and recent economic updates” to the G.C.E A/L teachers.
Introduction and Rationale
According to the request made by the A/L teachers who participated in the previous seminar conducted by the Ministry of Education and NIE as a collective effort, where resource persons from from Dept.of Economics participated (Dr.(Ms) K.Karunaanithy, Mr.S.S Uthayakumar, and Ms.MDA Christian ) is to arrange a workshop regarding the National Income Accounting by the experts involved practically. Therefore, after a fruitful discussion with the responsible officials in the Central Bank of Sri Lanka and the Department of Census and Statistics, the seminar was organized by the Department of Economics, Faculty of Arts.
National Income Accounting and revising monetary policy aspects are the key areas of the A/L’s Curriculum, and the seminar was expected to provide clear knowledge to the teachers of A/L Economics.
Agenda
1. Welcome and Opening Remarks
The seminar was initiated at 8 Am with the registration of the participants carried out by the final year students and the seminar started at 9 Am by Dr.(Ms) K.Karunaanithy, Head, Department of Economics with a welcome speech. Mrs.M.D.A Christian, Lecturer (Unconfirmed), and Ms.S.Piratheepan, Lecturer (Probationary) facilitated the seminar.
Thereafter, a brief address was delivered by Mr.Subakaran, Deputy Director (Training), Northern Provincial, Department of Education, Jaffna about the importance of the seminar for teachers in the current context.

Outcomes of the Seminar
• Teachers gained the methods and importance of national income accounting, including GDP calculation and its components.
• Familiarity with the new Central Bank Act, its implications for monetary policy, and how it affects the economy.
• They were made aware of recent economic updates and their practical implications for national and global economies.
• Engaged with experts in the field and updated ongoing professional growth and development in the above-mentioned themes.
• Teachers requested to make it an annual event.
Feedback
Teachers expressed appreciation for the engaging content and interactive format as the discussions were in Tamil medium. Suggestions for future seminars included more workshops on assessment strategies and advanced economic topics. Also, they expressed that the Dept. should arrange school visits to promote Economics education at school.
Conclusion
The seminar on “National Income Accounting Calculation” and “Monetary Policy under the New Central Bank Act and Recent Economic Updates” provided an invaluable platform for G.C.E. A/L Economics teachers in the Northern Province to deepen their understanding of these critical economic concepts. The sessions highlighted the latest methodologies in calculating national income, offering insights into more accurate measurement techniques, which are essential for educating A/L students. Additionally, the discussions on the new Central Bank Act and recent economic developments shed light on the evolving role of monetary policy in stabilizing the economy and achieving sustainable growth.
The seminar was ended at 4 Pm with the vote of thanks by Mrs.M.D.A Christian, Lecturer (Unconfirmed), Department of Economics.
