A Flavorful Graduation Day - Food and Garments Stall – 19th , 20th & 21st of July 2023

The Young Economists’ Association, of the Department of Economics, organized an enticing food and garments stall during the graduation day ceremony at Jaffna University premises  with the guidance of senior treasurer, Mrs.M.D.A.Christian and the HoD, Dr.(Ms).K.Karunaanithy. It was organized by the Young Economic Association of the Department of Economics, Faculty of Arts, University of Jaffna, with the guidance of Ms. M.D. Christian (Senior Treasurer of the Young Economic Association) and Dr. (Ms.) K.Karunaanithy (Head, Department of Economics). The event aimed to provide an opportunity for Young Economists Association entrepreneurs to showcase their talents while raising funds to support future activities and programs of the Young Economists Association. 

Objectives:

1.Developing Entrepreneurship Skills:

The primary objective of the food and garments stall was to foster entrepreneurship skills among students and encourage them to view entrepreneurship as a desirable and feasible career option. By going beyond theoretical knowledge taught in the course unit AECE 32023, “Entrepreneurship and Small Business,” this stall provided practical experience and a platform to gain confidence in starting new ventures and exploring innovative ideas.

 

2. Fundraising:

The Young Economists Association aimed to raise funds through the stall to support and execute more successful projects in the near future. These funds would enable the association to continue organizing events and initiatives that promote economic awareness and education among students and the university community.

Stall Highlights:

Food Delights: The food stall showcased a diverse menu featuring local delicacies such as BBQ hotdogs, mojitos, tea, popcorn, faluda, sandwiches, chicken popcorn, and biryani. The stall was manned by 22 enthusiastic students who participated in the event.

Garments Showcase: The garments stall displayed trendy and traditional clothing items designed by young entrepreneurs associated with the Young Economists Association. “Magendii Arts,” a venture by two students, attracted attention and provided them with a platform to exhibit their creativity and talents.

Student Feedback:

The participating students expressed immense joy and enthusiasm for the event, highlighting the great platform it provided to showcase their talents and entrepreneurial efforts. They gained valuable experience and confidence, and the stall motivated them to explore further business ventures in the future. The students expressed gratitude to the Department Head, Dr.(Ms).K.Karunaanithy, and their subject lecturer senior treasurer, Mrs.M.D.A.Christian, for their support and guidance in making the stall a success.

Success and Impact:

The food and garments stall received an overwhelming response from the graduation day attendees, including students, their families, and university staff. The presence and support of faculty and academics further bolstered the event’s impact, as they not only purchased products but also offered valuable ideas related to food and entrepreneurship.

Feedback:

As it was the first time the Department of Economics organized a stall at the university premises, the staff appreciated the initiative and encouraged the Young Economists Association to continue such endeavors in the future. The feedback received from visitors was overwhelmingly positive, praising the association’s efforts in encouraging entrepreneurship among students. Attendees also admired the diversity and quality of the products offered at the stall.

Conclusion:

The food and garments stall organized by the Young Economists Association during the Jaffna University Graduation Day was a resounding success. The event not only achieved its objectives of promoting entrepreneurship but also garnered significant support and appreciation from the university community. The positive impact and valuable feedback received have motivated the association to plan similar events in the future, empowering students to explore entrepreneurship as a viable and rewarding career option. The funds raised will enable the Young Economists Association to continue its mission of promoting economic awareness and educational programs for the benefit of students and society. The success of the stall sets a strong foundation for further entrepreneurial endeavors by the Young Economists Association and its members.
